Indoors on the hardwood, Mt. View HS (Bend) has owned the Civil War Series rivalry against the Bend Lava Bears having won the last 7 previous meetings.
But, that all changed Friday night on the #10 Lava Bears home floor as Bend notched its first win over the 4th ranked Cougars, 70-56.
It was the first win in nearly 3 years for Bend (8-5) beating Mt. View (9-3), but the first win in the rivalry for Bears first year Head Coach Scott Baker who after the game said, “Thanks,” when congratulated for the accomplishment.
A humble and very modest Baker and his Bears were ready this time said Cougs Coach Craig Reid in his 14th season. “Oh yah….they ran some good stuff and were ready for us for sure.”
Bend found themselves down early, but then made a run at the Cougs. Bend Head Coach Scott Baker knows how to win as he was a member on the Willamette University NAIA National Championship team in the 90’s.
The Lava Bears were led by Cole Harneson’s 14 points and guard Connor Scott added 13 in the win.
Jaylin Robinson also helped inside as Bend outrebounded Mt. View 37-20.
Mt. View just had an off night shooting, as the Cougs sank just 30-percent of their shots on the night, including a dismal second quarter which saw them put up just 3 points.
Mt. View a top 5A program in the State is never out of a game, and the Cougars mounted a late second half comeback. Junior guard Mitts Haugen led all scorers with 16 points and Lannin added 14.
The teams have two more games left in the series this season, the next coming at ‘The Black Hole’ home court of Mt. View on February 11th, then return to the Bears den to close out the regular season on Friday, February 28th.
Up next for Bend, the Lava Bears host 4A Ridgeview, while Mt. View hosts Crook County on Tuesday night.
