East wins All-Star Shrine game, 20-8, over West

East defeated West, 20-8, in the 66th annual Oregon Shrine East-West All-Star Football game at Bulldog Stadium in Baker City on Saturday.

Glide running back Cyller Cunningham was on the East team. Sutherlin’s Korbyn Jones was an alternate for East but did not play in the contest.

At halftime East was leading 6-0 in a defensive battle.

The game features the top graduated senior in classes 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A who are playing to benefit the Portland Shriners Hospital for Children.

Douglas County players for the West were Andrew Harrington and Nic Freeman of Oakland, Taylor Gross, Johnathan Warner and Anthony Rondeau of South Umpqua, Jacob Payne of Camas Valley and Ted Wickman of Yoncalla. Rondeau and Wickman were alternates and added to the team late.

Steve Stebbins of SU was a coach for the West along with Laric Cook of Falls City, Kyle Braa of Scio and Tony Smith of St. Paul. Oakland coach Ben Lane was selected as a coach but could not make the trip due to an injury.

Elaina Dowdy of Douglas was a cheerleader for the West team.

The teams practiced at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande for the past week to get ready for the game. The players and coaches all got to stay in the dorms.

Players got to meet the children they’re playing for during a trip to the hospital.
