BEND ELKS DROP TWINBILL TO WCL CHAMPS

It was a rough day for the Bend Elks, as they lost both ends of a double header on Wednesday against the Bellingham Bells, 4-3 and 11-4.

Bellingham jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game on a sacrifice fly by RF Walker Olis (Sr. Pacific U), driving home SS Dustin Breshears (Sr. Gonzaga), and a single by Joey Harris (Sr. Gonzaga), scoring CF Aaron Stroosma (Sr. Liberty).

The Elks answered in the 2nd when Patrick Flynn (Fr. U of Utah) went yard with a 2 run HR, and took the a 3-2 lead when Billy King (Soph. OSU) singled in Dalton Hurd (Fr. Seattle U).

However the Bells dinged the Elks for two more runs in the 5th when Stroosma drove in Breshears and then scored on a passed ball, to put the Bells on top 4-3.

Pitcher Andrew Kemmerer (Sr. U of Central Ark.) took home his 3rd win of the season for the Bells, while RP Jake Forrester (Fr. Central Wash. U) chalked up the loss for the Elks.

In the second game of the double header, things went from bad to worse for the Elks as they dropped the 2nd game of the day to the Bells 11-4.

The Bells came out swinging jumping out to an early 1-0 in the 1st when OF Chris Beall (Sr. ASU) drove in Stroosma with a single.

The hits kept on coming as the Bells knocked in 4 more runs in the 2nd and 4 more in the 3rd, including a 3 run home run by OF Chase Scott (Sr. U of Southern Miss), driving in IF Patrick McGrath (Sr. WSU) and IF Beau Branton (Soph. Stanford).

The Elks answered with an RBI single from 2B Tyler Davis (Jr. NW Nazarene U) in the bottom of the 3rd, driving home West Tunnell (Jr. Baylor), to make it 9-1.

The Bells also put up runs in the 5th and 6th as well, while the Elks score 1 run a piece in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but it was too little too late, as starting pitcher Aaron Summerville (Soph. Standford) picked up the win for the Bells, and Nate Hunter  took the loss for the Elks, giving up 9 earned runs in 3 innings.

Despite the losses, the Elks remain at the top of the South Division of the West Coast league by 7 games at 31-13, with 9-League games to play.

However, the Bellingham Bells of the West Division are only 2 and a half games behind the Elks in the League standings at 29-16.

The Elks next game will be Friday in Medford as they face off against the Rogues in a 3 game series.

Bend’s next home game will be Monday August 3rd versus Kitsap.
