Most every successful athletic Coach, or Sports broadcaster has a ‘Godfather,’ or mentors in their craft that have helped shape a person’s acumen, demeanor, and work ethic.
And, most have been afforded an opportunity to grow and develop at the next level by mentors who have spent countless hours grooming that special person for the opportunity of a lifetime.
Safe to say there are two men, Kent Wigle and Jim Pallazolo, who made a huge impact of Mark Helfrich, who recently was hired as Oregon’s 32nd Head Football Coach.
Wigle earned 303 wins and 4-State Titles while claiming 21-League Titles, and being named ‘Coach of the Year’ in Oregon 4-times.
Palazzolo’s success should not be measured by a win-loss record, rather by how he fought to keep the Football program alive in Ashland at SOU.
Neither Wigle, or Palazzolo would allow themselves to take credit as they are two of the most humble, and well-respected Coaches I’ve known, who give all credit to their players, their teams, assistant Coaches, and their own mentors.
But, both have outgoing personalities and have a passion for sports, football, competition, and life, second to none I’ve come across.
It was Wigle and Palazzolo who helped guide Mark Helfrich as a Quarterback, and good citizen. And now, both share their time with the young Helfrich in High School, and College.
