It seemed as if the Beavers were well on their way to an upset Sunday evening, as Oregon State (12-12, 2-9 Pac-12) played host to the Colorado Buffaloes (16-7, 6-5), but it was Colorado who left Gill Coliseum with a 72-68 win over the Beavers of Oregon State.
“I was very proud of the effort that the guys put forth.” – Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson
Oregon State got off to a slow start, as Colorado jumped out to a 13 point lead mid-way through the first half. Oregon State though surged at the end of the 1st half, and Ahmad Starks led the charge with three of his six three-pointers coming in the final minutes of the 1st half. The Beavers lead would get as large as seven with 13:03 to play, but it was short-lived as Colorado, ranked sixth in the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball.
Three players reached double figures in scoring but was fueled by the play of junior point guard Ahmad Starks, who scored 20 points, including going 6-11 behind the three-point line. Roberto Nelson led the Beavers with 21 points, and Joe Burton had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Colorado’s Spenser Dinwiddie led all scoring with 24 points, including 6-6 from the field, 4-4 behind the arc, and 8-8 from the free throw line.
“I wasn’t happy with what we got at the end of the game. There were times when we stopped them, came down, then turned the ball over.”
Oregon State finished the game with 21 turnovers while Colorado had 9.
The Beavers will now travel to Pullman to face off against the Washington State Cougars (11-13, 2-9 Pac-12) on Wednesday, February 13th at 7pm, followed by a bout with the Washington Huskies (13-11, 5-6) Saturday. Colorado will host the Arizona schools this week.
