MARIST RETURNS THE FAVOR: ENDS MT. VIEW SEASON WITH 28-16 WIN

Senior QB Kamerun Smith scored three touchdowns for the Spartans as Marist avenged its 2011 loss to Mountain View by defeating the Cougars 28-16 Friday night in the Quarterfinals of the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires High School Playoffs.

Both teams punted to end their first drive of the game, but Marist got rolling on their second possession, a 7 play, 65 yard drive capped by a 31 yard pass from Smith to Josh Harper to give Marist the 7-0 lead with 4:49 left in the 1st quarter.

The Spartans would lose star running back Austin Baird early in the 2nd quarter due to a leg injury, and he did not return to the game.

Baird’s share of the workload in the running game was filled by Andrew Park, and his receiving numbers were inherited by Kaelen Byrum, who hauled in Smith’s 2nd touchdown pass of the game, a 39 yarder with 6:49 left in the 2nd quarter to give Marist the 14 point advantage.

Mountain View’s Bryce Tipton converted on a 27 yard field goal attempt with 11 seconds left to put points on the board for the Cougars, cutting their halftime deficit to 14-3.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, they went 3 and out on their opening possession of the second half, and punter James Phelan ball only netted the Cougars 10 yards of field position.

Marist capitalized and picked up where it left off, as Park scored from a yard out to make it 21-3 Marist with 8:26 left in the 3rd quarter.

Toby Webb gave the Cougars some life in their ensuing drive as Toby Webb ran it in on a bootleg to his right from 11 yards out to give Mountain View their first touchdown of the game and make it 21-10 Marist with 7:07 left in the 3rd.

That would be the last score for the next 15 minutes of game time, as both defenses stepped up as 4 straight drives, 2 by each team, ended in punts before Smith scored his third touchdown of the game from a yard out to give Marist the 28-10 lead with 4:16 remaining in the game.

Webb would find Jace Johns on a 9 yard strike with 46 seconds left in the game for Mountain View, but the ensuing 2 point conversion attempt was no good, leaving the final 28-16 margin.

For the Spartans, Smith finished 17 of 32 for 259 yards and 3 TD’s (1 rushing) to lead the way for Marist, who improved to 10-1 on the season. The only loss to last year’s State Runnerup, Sherwood.

Andrew Park carried 18 times for 64 yards on the day largely after Baird left the game, who had 6 carries for 42 yards and 3 receptions for 31 yards before exiting the game. Josh Harper led the receivers with 114 yards on 8 receptions and the score.

Toby Webb was 10 of 20 for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 rush) for the Cougars, Kyler Ayers had only 51 yards on 22 carries, and Jacob Heffner had a career day, hauling in 9 passes for 123 yards for Mountain View, who finishes their season 7-5.
