Summit High School could not stop a high octane offense and defense from Mountain ViewHigh School on a cold, wet field Friday night in Bend on the westside.
The Storm celebrated Homecoming in what was their final IMC (Intermountain Conference) game of the season, but were unable to score until late in the 3rd quarter, as the #7 ranked Cougars rolled to a 50-12 win.
Senior WR John Carroll led the Mt.Viewoffense with 3 touchdowns from senior QB Tony Webb. On the defensive side, senior LB Kyle Shaver led the team in sacks with two, plus two fumble recoveries.
The Storm attempted to catch the Cougars off-guard to start the game, with an onside kick attempt, however that left Mt.View with good field position. Once both teams traded possessions after 4th down early on, the Cougars scored quickly after just two plays on their second drive of the night
Carroll hauled in his first score of the night from Webb on a 59 yard pass giving Mt.View a 7-zip lead.
Following a Summit punt, the Cougars moved the ball from the 50 into the endzone again, this time on six plays, the latter of which was the 15 yard scoring run from senior RB Trevor Roberts, his third of the season.
Roberts also scored two of the Cougs’ five sacks on the night. Mt.View then showed a trick of their own, converting a two-point conversion from junior WR Nick Hjelm, bumping the score to 15-0.
One more Storm punt, and the Cougars scored on six plays yet again, this time senior RB Kyler Ayers ran it in from 20 yards out, capping off a 65-yard drive. 22-0 Cougs. Ayers would finish the night with 17 carries for 102 yards and three touchdowns.
Mountain View upped the score to 29-0 on another six play drive, after a third Storm punt. It was Webb to Carroll yet again on a long ball, 55 yards, and only Carroll’s third catch of the game.
Carroll would finish the night with 159 yards on four catches, his fourth another touchdown for the team captain.
Along with the sacks, Mt.Viewforced three fumbles on the night, with Shaver picking up the first at their own 35-yard line in the 2nd quarter. That was the furthest Summit managed to get the ball in the first half.
Before halftime, the Cougars added one more touchdown from Ayers to make it 36-0 at the break.
In the second half, it was still all Mt.View until near the end of the 3rd quarter. Summit fumbled on back-to-back possessions at the start, and both times, the Cougars would turn them into touchdowns.
Mt.Viewwould go 52 yards in seven plays, and Ayers would get his third touchdown in the game on a one-yard rush. Then Carroll got his final score of the night, a 15-yard touchdown, finishing a 60-yard drive.
His quarterback Webb finished the night 8 for 11 with 217 yards and three touchdowns. The score sat at 50-0, beforeSummitbroke through.
The Storm marched 65 yards down the field on a drive that almost ended in a punt, but thanks to a roughing the kicker penalty, Summit took their second chance and put their first points on the board with a 6-yard touchdown throw from senior QB Josh Gallagher to junior WR Tyler Mullen.
Mullen led his team in receiving with seven catches and 61 yards.Summitfailed on the two-point try, making the score 50-6.
Before it was over, Summitput together a game-ending scoring drive. With zeroes on the clock, Gallagher fired a touchdown pass to junior WR Josh Cherry, who scored from 19 yards out.
Cherry had four receptions for 44 yards. Gallagher was 13 of 29 with 143 yards and two touchdowns.
On the ground, junior RB Kalani Dandurand took 23 carries for 77 yards. He still leads the Storm in rushing in J.T. Evans absence, with 297 yards and two touchdowns on the year.
The defending 5A state champs’ victory not only overshadowed Summit’s Homecoming, but also the announcement early in the day the OSAA awarded Summit this year’s prestigious ‘Oregonian Cup.’
Summit drops to 2-5 (0-3) and will play the Crook County Cowboys in Prineville next week.
Mountain View, now 4-3 (1-0) plays their last two at home, going up against league rivals #6 Redmond 7-0 (2-0), and Bend 2-5 (1-1). winning 47-41
