Crater girls streak past EP

Senior post Nehkyah Ellis dominated the paint early in the second half to help Crater pull away, scoring four of the Comets’ first five baskets in the third quarter on her way to a game-high 15 points as ninth-ranked Crater beat Eagle Point 75-48 in Midwestern League girls basketball action Wednesday at Eagle Point High School.
Ellis added four rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Comets, who shot 52 percent (32-for-61) from the field, including 5 of 10 from long range.
That kind of accuracy didn’t happen by accident, according to head coach Scott Dippel, whose team has won five in a row to improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the MWL.
“We were really focused on getting the ball inside and establishing the inside, and we created turnovers early and were effective in transition,” Dippel said. “In the second half we didn’t do as good a job getting to (Eagle Point), but to their credit they knocked down 3s with hands in the face.”
Sydney Gray had a solid all-around game with eight points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists, Eliza Idiart hit three 3-pointers on her way to 13 points and four assists and Maya Van Hook scored eight for the Comets, who haven’t lost since Dec. 20.
Teya Amidei and Nicole Lawler each made three 3-pointers and scored nine points to lead Eagle Point (6-6, 2-3), which hit eight treys.
“Really, tempo and pace was the key,” Dippel said.
Crater hosts fourth-ranked Springfield on Friday in a battle of conference unbeatens.

SOUTH MEDFORD 73, ENTERPRISE 71: At Redding, Calif., Ula Chamberlin scored a season-high 32 points and Toni Coleman scored nine of her 16 points in the second half, including the go-ahead layup with 1 minute, 20 seconds to go as the Panthers rallied for the nonconference win.
After Coleman went 1-for-2 at the free throw line with seven seconds left, Enterprise advanced the ball to midcourt and missed a desperation heave at the buzzer.
Chamberlin added eight rebounds and two steals, Coleman six steals and Sierra Logue six rebounds and two blocks. Kaili Chamberlin had five points, six boards and two steals for the Panthers (10-2), who trailed 58-52 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jadyn Matthews led Enterprise with 29 points.

CRATER 58, EAGLE POINT 29: At Eagle Point, Nate Bittle scored 25 points and Crater jumped out to a 25-13 halftime lead en route to a Midwestern League rout at Eagle Point High School.
Jayden Vranes and Hunter Chubb added nine points apiece for the Comets (9-4, 3-1 MWL), who have won four of their last five games.
Eagle Point (2-10, 0-5) was led by Hayden Neyt, who had 10 points and six rebounds, while Devin Bradd added nine points and six boards.

CRATER 57, EAGLE POINT 15: At Central Point, Crater won the final eight matches, including five by fall, to trounce Eagle Point 57-15 in a Midwestern League dual at Crater High School.
The teams were tied 15-all after Eagle Point’s Bradey Thrash pinned Brayden Gray in 3 minutes, 17 seconds in the 138-pound match. The Comets took over from there, with Isaiah Griffith earning a 7-5 sudden victory over Kyle O’Neil at 145 to kickstart Crater’s nearly flawless finish. Hunter Hiatt followed with a quick pin of Brian de La Cruz (43 seconds) at 152, and after a decision the Comets earned three straight pins to put the dual away.

SKYLINE DUALS: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix went 3-0 at the conference’s annual get-together, beating Henley 54-30, Hidden Valley 48-30 and Klamath Union 66-9 while racking up 22 pins.
Host Mazama edged Phoenix in the final team points tally, 182-168, while Henley came in third with 123 and Hidden Valley fourth with 52.
Phoenix’s Emma Truex (126) and Jacky Hawkins (145) both earned three pins apiece.
