Crater’s distance runner Andy Monroe’s resume speaks for itself. He already has two 5A state titles in the 3000 and another in the 1500, oh and not to mention he’s just a junior!
Monroe is coming off a huge win in the 3000 at the 5A Track State Championships in Eugene and had a chance to defend his title in the 1500 from the year before, however, suffered a partial tear to his plantar fascia in the last 400 meters of the 3000. “…At the time I didn’t really get to soak up the glory of being repeating state titles because I was kind of on the ground in pain and just kind of wanted to get out of there, but right now it feels really great because I know it’s a really prestigious act for athlete to become a multiple state champion,” according to the track stud.
When asked what his thoughts on how he thinks he would have finished in the 1500 if he didn’t get injured, he responded with, “I was really excited for the 1500. In the 3K I was on pace to run a really big PR and my fitness level was high, but I have one more year and some more 1500s to look forward to.”
It takes a certain level of toughness to be a competitive runner and it’s clear that Monroe has that toughness, even though he didn’t always have a love for running. According to Monroe he actually hated running when he was younger and it wasn’t until eighth grade, when he had to run with His sister’s cross country team as a form of punishment, till Any developed his love for running. “I went there and ran with them and was like man this atmosphere, this team is all amazing. The most fun part about track is the team aspect,” according to Monroe.
Andy is also an avid hip-hop and rap lover and if he isn’t running on the track he is probably listening to music and studying. Let me tell you, he knows the rap game. Some favorite artists he listed were Post Malone, Travis Scott, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. He went on to mention that his favorite albums/mixtapes of all time are Eminem, The Marshall Mather’s EP. 2, Travis Scott’s Bees in the Trap and Post Malone’s, August 23rd.
Andy is only a junior and right now he is focused on rehabbing and getting back to full health, however still has big hopes for next season, “Definitely I want to get back by cross country season and close out my high school career with a good cross country season and go back into track and try to redeem myself.”
