DEGAETANO LED BEND RUN OVER SUMMIT 51-14; MT.VIEW BLASTS BUCS

Bend High celebrated both Homecoming and Senior night on Friday as they opened their IMC (Intermountain Conference) season, and senior running back Duke Degaetano led the festivities, scoring 3 touchdowns to lead the Bend Lava Bears to a decisive 51-14 victory over the Summit Storm.

Bend manning the trenches against Summit

Prior to the game, when asked about the key to the game for his Lava Bears, Head coach Matt Craven said, “We have got to run the ball if we are going to beat Summit. Plain and Simple.”

Bend certainly did that behind DeGaetano, who came out of the gate looking very impressive, carrying the ball 9 times on the opening drive for 71 yards, capped off by an 8 yard touchdown that made the game 7-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Summit return man Tyler Mullen fumbled the ball, the first of 6 on the night for Summit, and it was recovered by Bend on the Storm 14 yard line.

The next play for Bend, Jonah Koski hooked up with Connor Scott for a 14 yard pass to give the Lava Bears a 13-0 lead after the missed extra point.

Bend was wearing baby blue colored jerseys in support of the ‘Claw out Cancer’ night, an event sponsored by Bend Urology in delivering awareness to Prostate Cancer this month.

After being forced to punt, Summit had their first spark as Jake Munsell intercepted an attempted screen pass of Jonah Koski, and returned it 23 yards before being pushed out at the Bend 2 yard line.

Junior running back Kalani Dandurand scored on the first play after the turnover, making it 13-7 Bend at the end of the first quarter.

Summit Offense goes to work against Lava Bears Friday

From there on,  the Lava Bears came alive as they scored 13 points in the 2nd quarter behind a 28 yard touchdown run from Degaetano, his 2nd, and a 40 yard fumble return by Kyle Bailey for a score to give Bend a 26-7 edge at halftime.

The Lava Bears would tack on 19 more points in the 3rd quarter with Jonah Koski connecting with Sami Godlove for a 23 yard scoring toss, DaGaetano added his 3rd touchdown run of the game, and Dallas Fagan returned a fumble 20 yards for a score to make the score 45-7 Bend with 6 minutes left in the quarter.

Bend would add a late touchdown with sophomore running back Christian Johnson punching it in the endzone from 3 yards out to give Bend the 51-7 lead.

Summit scored again on the 2nd touchdown run from Dandurand with 2:08 left in the game, but by that point Bend had the game well in hand.

Degaetano finished with 185 yards on 27 carries to go with his 3 touchdowns. Jonah Koski went 8-11 for 94 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception to help lead Bend, who is now 2-4 on the season, and travels to face off against Redmond next week.

For the Storm, Dandurand carried the ball for 79 yards on 17 carries and 2 scores.

Josh Gallagher completed 8 of 14 passes for 102 yards, and Tyler Mullen hauled in 3 passes for a total of 42 yards as Summit falls to 2-4 and hosts Mountain View next Friday for the Storm’s Homecoming.

Austin Peters provided a nice highlight for Summit with this catch of a Gallagher thrown pass.

Meantime…#7 Mt. View scored an impressive 55-14 win over Pendleton led by Sr. RB Kyler Ayres packing the ball 26 times for 289-yards and 3 Touchdowns.

Sr. QB Toby Webb finished 8 of 13 passing for 171 yards and 4 TD’s, 3 of which Jake Heffner hauled in for scores.
