DUCKS DASHED IN SEASON OPENER

Friday night marked the home opener for Oregon Ducks baseball. After finishing last season ranked #11 nationally and a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals, and starting this season with a 4 game sweep over Hawai’i, the expectations were high as Oregon took on the Loyal Marymount Lions. Despite a #5 national ranking, Oregon was not able to clench victory as they fell 7-2.

The turning point of the night was the 5th inning in which Loyola scored 4 of their 7 runs. After a strong first four innings, pitcher Jake Reed allowed 3 Loyola players to round home base, bringing his ERA to 3.27 on the night. After the 5th Reed was replaced by relief and left hand pitcher, Christian Jones.

“They hit some balls and they found holes in the field with the balls they did hit. It was hard to come back from.”

-Jake Reed

Oregon had prime opportunities to score early on but couldn’t seem to capitalize. The Ducks found themselves with bases loaded and 2 strikes both at the end of the 1rst, as well as the 2nd innings. Both times the player’s at bat struck out leaving the Ducks scoreless.

“We were uncharacteristically ineffective offensively tonight. Loyola did a good job using the whole field.”

–Coach George Horton

Oregon (4,1) has another two games left this weekend against Loyola (3-2), before taking on Portland (1-4) on Tuesday.
