Ahead of their upcoming Intermountain Conference league game with the (3-3) Ridgeview Ravens, the (4-2) Summit Storm stressed simplicity.
Clock management, high percentage passing and running the football is about as simple as it gets, and it lead the Storm to a 42-22 win over the Redmond Panthers, in a game that saw sophomore QB John Bledsoe throw two touchdowns to tight end Cam McCormick.
“It allows our players to make plays,” said head coach Joe Padilla of his simplistic offensive attack, as his Storm practiced under oppressive grey skies Tuesday night.
“We have a number of guys that have big play ability. Keeping us one dimensional; that hurts us and we can’t have that, so we like to mix it up.”
The playoff picture for the Storm is also pretty simple; they will qualify for the OSAA 5A State Playoffs if they win their next 2 games, this Friday vs. the Ravens, and an all-important road game on Oct. 24 with the red-hot (5-1) #8 Bend High Lava Bears.
“We have to win out,” said Coach Padilla, who can get his 15th win of his three-year stint as Head Coach Friday. “If we don’t, then we leave it up to the rankings and that’s really not something we want to have happen.”
John Bledsoe spoke about how much of an asset Cam McCormick is on the field.
“He’s huge, he is a freak of nature and has great hands also a great person, and he is a huge asset, I love throwing him the ball.”
Bledsoe, a sophomore and son of NFL great QB Drew Bledsoe, has thrown for 323 yards and four touchdowns on the year.
He feels great being able to lead the Storm to the playoffs which would mean everything to him, and to the seniors on the team.
“I really want to make the play offs just for the seniors, I know that we have a lot of juniors who are going to be really good next year… but for the seniors who have worked really hard to get where they are, a small class but personally I think that we can make it.”
The Storm kept it balanced against Redmond, rushing for 112 yards behind Joe Garcia, and passing for 138 yards and three TD’s behind Bledsoe.
