With Help From Cubs, Huskies Claim OWL Title
Turner – Cascade entered their final game in the Oregon West League before being moved up to the 5A classification next year when the OSAA redistricts teams with a game lead, and needing only to beat North Marion to claim an OWL title on their way out. But the Huskies, and especially their defense, would have none of it.
North Marion snagged 3 second half interceptions, 2 in their own end zone, forced and recovered a Cascade fumble at their own 8 yard line, dropped the Cougars for 2 safeties, and threw in a goal line stand at the end of the game to preserve the shutout on their way to a 10-0 win. It was the first time Cascade has been shut out in over 6 years.
And when Newport held on to upset Stayton 30-20 in Stayton, after building a 2 touchdown halftime lead, it meant North Marion had won the OWL, and earned the league’s top seed in the OSAA playoffs.
Neither team was able to generate any appreciable offense for most of the first quarter, but North Marion, if they didn’t flip the field, did alter the tilt of it with a 25 yard completion from Sergio Jimenez down the left sideline to Bradley Hansen at the Cascade 15 yard line on the last play of the first quarter.
