Some of the items discussed at the Oregon School Activities Association’s summer workshop will be a change of venue for the track and field state championships and the addition of girls wrestling.
The Executive Board for OSAA met in Redmond on July 23 to discuss these topics, as well as others.
Track and field championships for 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A schools will take place at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, while 2A and 1A schools will travel to Western Oregon University in Monmouth to compete in the state championships.
Mt. Hood Community College will host 6A and 5A schools on May 24-25. Class 4A and 3A schools will travel to the two-year college in Gresham on May 17-18 for the state championships.
Western Oregon hosted the small school state track meets from 1992-2012 and will once again host the small schools on May 17-18.
All six classifications competed at Hayward Field since 2013. The last time the UO track did not host at least one state track meet was 1978.
The University of Oregon is preparing to host the 2021 World Outdoor Championships and the stadium is undergoing a $200 million remodel that is expected to be completed by April 2020. OSAA is expecting to host the 2020 state track and field championships at Hayward Field.
Girls wrestling will also officially be added to the list of activities in 2018-19 and girls will be able to participate in one of 14 different weight classes: 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190 and 235.
OSAA has changed the weigh-in procedure for wrestling, requiring contestants to wear a legal competition uniform.
Additionally, the OSAA has changed its lightning safety guidelines to align with recent changes made by the National Federation of State High School Associations, schools will be required to have schedules and rosters inputted on the OSAA website prior to the first contest, home team designations were clarified for state championships, and the hearing dates calendar was released.
