PREP BASKETBALL: Vikings top Stephens, Challengers

KLAMATH FALLS — Emily Stephens poured in a game-high 20 points but the Cascade Christian girls basketball team’s slow start left it in too deep of a hole as Class 4A host Mazama turned in a 53-37 victory on Monday.

The Class 3A Challengers (1-5) faced a 24-12 halftime deficit but cut the margin to 27-20 midway through the third quarter before the Vikings’ 9-0 run put the contest out of reach.

Stephens also collected eight rebounds, two steals and a block for the Challengers, who received 10 points and seven boards from Abigail Alexander.

MAZAMA 60, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 38: At Klamath Falls, Cascade Christian had a hard time dealing with Mazama’s inside-outside attack in the first quarter, allowing the Vikings to build an early lead and reel in the home victory.

The Vikings’ 6-foot-9 post Gordon McCready scored nine of his 14 points in the first quarter, and his teammates knocked down four of their five 3-pointers.

Levi Sciapiti led the Challengers (1-6) with eight points while Dominic Lewis, Layne Collom and Nathan Spurlock all pitched in seven.
