DeLuca leads Phoenix to second at tourney —
Ezra DeLuca was crowned champion and Jacky Hawkins finished second to help the Phoenix wrestling team place second overall in the 27-team Cottage Grove Invitational on Saturday.
DeLuca was never really tested en route to his championship at 113 pounds, wrapping up his title with a 23-10 major decision over Clayton Hatcher of Douglas. The senior DeLuca was named most outstanding wrestler for the lower weights.
Hawkins lost a tough 9-5 decision to Cottage Grove’s Jacob Dunn in his championship match at 145.
Also leading the charge for Phoenix were Elijah Santana, who placed third at 152 with a pin of Siuslaw’s Ryan Jennings in 2:54. Ryan Brumble (195) and Chava Castanon (285) each placed fourth for the Pirates, with solid efforts also by Mike Walker (fifth, 152), Elijah Leonis (fifth, 132) and Dane Johnson (sixth, 170).
The Pirates totaled 190 points to trail only Glide, which won with 212. Douglas was third at 188.
South Medford’s contingent finished seventh overall with 142 points after Aidan Rania (106) and Killian Cosgrove (132) each advanced to their respective championship matches but came up shy. Ranio lost 8-6 to Carmelo Farfaglia of La Pine in his title match, while Cosgrove lost 12-6 to North Eugene’s Ishmael Blas.
Andrew Hall placed third for the Panthers at 145 after pinning Creswell’s Logan Johnson, and South Medford got fourth-place finishes from Calvin Davis (106), Brayden Ostvik (113) and Isaac Rubus (126).
Ashland’s Trevor Fulton advanced to the championship match at 182 but lost by 11-2 major decision to Glide’s Cayden Kangiser. The Grizzlies finished 17th with 52.5 points.
Cascade Christian’s Cody Havniear placed third at 132 to help the Challengers finish 25th with 27 points. Havniear pinned Cottage Grove’s Chance Ralston in 1:13 in his final match.
In the Cottage Grove girls wrestling tournament, Phoenix’s Emma Truex was named most outstanding girls wrestler after winning the title at 125 pounds with a 59-second pin of Churchill’s Aiden Tuers. Pirates teammate Bella Lucia was third at 155.
South Medford’s McKenna Prince placed second at 115 after being pinned in 3:04 by Bailey Overton of Siuslaw, and Panthers teammate Jasmine Sweitzer was third at 130.
Summer Bertrand of Ashland was fourth at 125.
RESER’S TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: At Hillsboro, Crater senior Tanner Ulrey settled for fifth place at 120 pounds and senior Hunter Hiatt finished sixth at 145 in the elite all-class gathering at Liberty High School.
Ulrey and Hiatt each advanced to the semifinal round after unbeaten efforts Friday, but Ulrey lost 10-3 to top-seeded Lorenzo Vasquez of Culver and Hiatt was pinned in 48 seconds by Crescent Valley standout Legend Lamer. Vasquez and Lamer went on to claim the overall titles at their respective weight classes.
In consolation action, Ulrey lost a tough 3-2 decision to Ezra McIntosh of La Grande before scoring a 6-4 decision over third-seeded Haydn Millard of Dallas in the fifth-place final.
Hiatt was pinned in 2:21 in his first consolation match by Colson Spencer of Dallas and then lost a rematch to Roseburg’s Tristin David after getting pinned in 1:48 in the fifth-place final. Hiatt had pinned the third-seeded Roseburg junior in 51 seconds during Friday’s quarterfinals.
Crater finished 15th with 79 points, with Newberg claiming the overall team title by totaling 214 points. Rounding out the top five were runner-up Crescent Valley (177.5), Dallas (157.5), Roseburg (147) and Sprague (132).
Swimming
PHOENIX TAKES SECOND: At North Bend, Phoenix’s boys and girls swim teams each placed second in the Potluck Invitational at North Bend Municipal Pool.
Phoenix senior Alec Shepherd led the charge for the boys team, placing first in the 50 freestyle in 23.15 seconds and second in the 100 free (51.60).
Shepherd also swam a leg on the Pirates’ runner-up 400 free relay squad (4:17.18) and their third-place 200 free relay team (1:50.22).
Bailey Olson placed second in the 500 free (6:14.94) to help the Phoenix boys score 74 points, trailing only North Bend (187).
For the Phoenix girls, Heidi Taylor was second in the 200 IM (2:54.56) and Sophia Stubblefield third in the 100 backstroke (1:23.63).
Stubblefield was also on the runner-up 400 free relay team (5:14.32), while Taylor swam a leg on the 200 free relay squad that placed third (2:12.03).
Phoenix’s girls scored 50 points to finish behind North Bend (142).
BOYS TEAM SCORES: North Bend 187, Phoenix 74, Hidden Valley 27, Reedsport 7.
GIRLS TEAM SCORES: North Bend 142, Phoenix 50, Hidden Valley 41, Lost River 21, Reedsport 12.
Boys Basketball
ROGUE RIVER 85, CANYONVILLE ACADEMY 53: At Rogue River, Aiden Norris powered his way inside for 18 points and reserve guard Justin Cook came off the bench to drain five 3-pointers in the first half and six overall to finish with 22 points for Rogue River in the Southern Cascade League rout.
The host Chieftains (8-9, 2-5 SCL) built a 40-23 advantage by halftime against Canyonville Academy (4-11, 0-7).
PAISLEY 50, PROSPECT 21: At Prospect, freshman Logan Gordon pulled in 10 rebounds and scored four points for Prospect in the Mountain Valley League loss.
Jadon Taylor, Matt Nelson and Jordan Cristee each added four points apiece for the Cougars (1-17, 0-10 MVL), who saw turnovers hinder a comeback effort after trailing 26-15 at halftime to Paisley (7-9, 6-5).
Girls Basketball
ROGUE RIVER 45, CANYONVILLE ACADEMY 17: At Rogue River, Madison McKown had 14 points and Diana Weilbacher added seven points in a runaway Southern Cascade League win for host Rogue River.
The Chieftains (12-7, 5-3 SCL) also got five points apiece from Amanda Earnest and Jonwyn Ayres to move into a second-place tie in league with Bonanza and Lakeview.
Canyonville Academy (1-13, 0-8) trailed only 13-6 after one quarter but 33-10 by halftime.
RV ADVENTIST 31, CHILOQUIN 29: At Chiloquin, Rogue Valley Adventist kept Chiloquin at bay in a neck-and-neck contest, with Savanah Zamora and Paris Quave each posting 10 points in the Mountain Valley League victory.
Zamora added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Red Tail Hawks (13-2, 8-2 MVL), who used a 13-6 edge in the second quarter to seize control.
Quave finished with four rebounds and three steals and Zoe Belovitch had seven points, four assists, four rebounds and three blocks against Chiloquin (8-8, 6-5).
PAISLEY 47, PROSPECT 23: At Prospect, freshman Tianna McGonagle scored 10 points and sophomore Annalee Breiholz added eight points but Prospect struggled with Paisley’s physicality and depth in the Mountain Valley League loss.
Prospect (3-15, 0-11 MVL) trailed 18-3 at halftime but picked up its play in the second half to only be outscored by nine points by Paisley (11-5, 7-4).
