Crater cleans up at EP Invitational

Crater wrestling coach Greg Haga gave his team a little break to rest up over the holidays but the Comets hit it hard in recent days and were more than ready to show off Saturday at the 14-team Eagle Point Invitational.
Crater crowned a champion at 11 of the 14 weight classes — boasting both finalists at three weights — to win the annual event going away at Eagle Point High with 503.5 points.
Runner-up Eagle Point scored 215.5 points and earned two of the remaining three championships.
“I was real happy with our young kids, definitely,” said Haga. “We just have a real good group of kids that like to work hard and get after it.”
Haga said he was especially pleased with the efforts of heavyweight champion Kaden Olson, 220 champion Aric Adams, 152 finalists Kabb Christianson and Ayden Kerrigan, 132 finalists Brayden Gray and Matthew Bolanos and 106 champion Ryan McCarty.
Olson faced a tough challenge in Rogue River heavyweight Danny Herinckx but won 5-1; Adams made his first appearance at 220 and pinned Rogue River’s Gabe Tambellini in the finals; Christianson pinned Kerrigan in the second round and both were up from the junior varsity; freshmen Gray and Bolanos were both unseeded, and Gray won by fall; McCarty is undersized at 98 pounds but still fended off Mazama’s Kyler Pemberton for a fall in 4 minutes, 12 seconds.
Also earning titles for Crater were Tanner Ulrey (120), Angel Diaz (126), Colby Meek (145), Nathan Santoni (160), Logan Lowder (170) and Tony Flores (195). Luis Duarte was second to Rogue River’s Dyllan Houser at 182 and Isaiah Griffith was second for the Comets at 145.
Eagle Point’s Trigger Weyers (113) and Bradey Thrash (138) earned championships, with second-place efforts by Gabriel Smith (113), Freddy Barajas (120) and Josh Sitzer (170) giving the Eagles a boost.

NOR CAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Anderson, Calif., Phoenix secured three top-four efforts and finished 10th overall with 94.5 points in the California tournament.
Jacky Hawkins paced the Pirates, placing second at 145 pounds after a 20-9 major decision setback to Foothill’s Chris Ostegren in the championship finals.
Also for Phoenix, Ezra DeLuca (113) placed third behind a 9-7 win over host Anderson’s BIlly Smith, and Mike Walker (152) was fourth after being pinned in the first round by Shasta’s Aydin Facey.
South Medford finished 13th with 83.5 points, and Killian Cosgrove led the way by placing fourth at 132 pounds.
West Valley of Cottonwood, California, edged Casa Grande 169.6-166.5 for the overall team title.
Swimming
NORTH BOYS THIRD: At Grants Pass, North Medford, led by Daniel Olson, placed third in the 15-team Southern Oregon High School Invitational at the Grants Pass YMCA.
Olson won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 medley relay.
Roseburg won the team event with 307 points, followed by Grants Pass with 279 and North Medford with 272.
In the girls meet, Grants Pass scored 372 points to outdistance runner-up Sheldon (355).
Olson, a junior, took the 500 free in 22.48, ahead of second-place Alec Shepherd of Phoenix (22.93). Olson’s winning time in the 100 free was 49.92 seconds.
He teamed with Parker Perez, William Anderson and Levi Buker to win the medley relay in 1:46.98.
Shepherd claimed victory in the 100 butterfly in 56.92.
Ashland’s Chris Crownfelter was an individual and relay winner, capturing the 100 backstroke in 57.33 and teaming with Baylor Wiggins, Harry Ross and Hunter Oliver to claim the 400 free relay in 3:31.10.
North’s Anderson added a first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.27, and St. Mary’s Asa Frisbee took the 500 free in 5:20.16.
