Reserves lift North over South

Hot shooting in the second quarter allowed North Medford to pull away in a 72-59 non conference boys basketball defeat of crosstown rival South Medford Tuesday.
The Black Tornado (7-6) made nine of its 11 field goals en route to 24 points in the frame and a 41-27 halftime lead at South Medford High.
“I thought our backup guys came in and played a really good quarter,” said North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn.
Nick Karrick made a couple of his four 3-pointers early, then Victor Orozco-Bernal followed suit and Jett Carpenter dropped in six points in the period.
“That group sparked us,” said Plankenhorn. “That’s the only quarter that we had true separation. All the other ones were still competitive.”
Five Tornado players reached double figures in scoring, led by Carpenter’s 15 points. He also had five rebounds and four assists.
Karrick and Garrett Parker each scored 12, and Eli Spence and Jaray Thomas had 11 each.
Spence grabbed nine rebounds and Darrius Wells dished four assists.
South Medford (1-12) got 12 points from Keegan Losinski and 11 from Sherman Hunter.

ST. MARY’S 56, SOUTH UMPQUA 42: At Myrtle Creek, St. Mary’s forced 30 turnovers and won its Far West League opener.
St. Mary’s corralled 14 steals in evening its overall record at 7-7. The Crusaders held the Lancers (1-14, 0-2 FWL) to four first-quarter points and led 31-14 at halftime.
Francis Okeyia had 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals for St. Mary’s, and Tre Foster grabbed 11 rebounds, made four steals and had three blocks.

SUTHERLIN 68, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 47: At Sutherlin, Sutherlin’s matchup zone defense stymied Cascade Christian in the early going of the Far West League opener for both teams.
The Bulldogs (12-3) took a 35-19 halftime lead, paced by Mason Gill, who finished with 25 points.
Cody Reece scored 15 points and Nathan Spurlock 11 for the Challengers (2-13).

RV ADVENTIST 62, PROSPECT 34: Four players accounted for all but four of Rogue Valley Adventist’s points in the Mountain Valley League win.
The Red Tail Hawks (7-3, 2-3 MVL) were led by Isaiah Christensen’s 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Caleb Jackson added 16 points, three assists and three rebounds.
Malachi Sitowski contributed 13 points, six boards and three steals, and Ruben Tovar had 11 points and three rebounds.
