(Hoopa, Ca.)—Longtime Hoopa resident and veteran racer Roger Sanderson (#B200) claimed the first race of the 2018 ‘Cal-Ore River Racers ‘My Circle-K/Colvin Oil’ summer race series.

Sanderson won the ‘Hoopa Hydro Heritage’ Mother’s Day race Sunday on the Trinity River in Hoopa, California holding off two perennial power racers in fast-time qualifier Jesse Reinhart (#17), and 2017 High-Point runner-up speester Cameron Kirkland (#68).

It was the 14th win in the last 22 races on the series for Sanderson who grew up on the Trinity River and won his first race on it in 1984, then earning his first of 5 Series Championships in Hoopa in 1988.

Although Sanderson finished first in each of the 6-legs (3-lap race), he had to outduel Reinhart, who owns a Hoopa win from 2016. Reinhart led Sanderson in one leg before he flew it on to the sand beach, but managed to throw his boat back in the water, and finish the leg 10th place.

“I had 68 covered, but couldn’t quite get to B200, but it was close. The water levels were perfect and it was a great race.” Said Reinhart, the 2016 High-Point runner-up.”

Meanwhile, Kirkland who snatched his first two career wins consecutively last summer was in the mix with Sanderson and Reinhart until he encountered ignition problems, but did bring it home.

Kirkland finished 2nd in the first two legs, and third in leg-3, and Reinhart finished third on the first leg upriver, and back-to-back second places on legs 3 & 4, until gear issues put him out for the day.

On the Podium were Sanderson, followed by #007 Jeff Lewis-Grants Pass, #20 Michael Dickson-Willow Creek, Ca., #AR15 Buck McCovey-Hoopa, Ca., and #4DQ Jared Hood-Grants Pass.
It was the first of 8 scheduled Cal-Ore River Racers Association (CORRA) events sanctioned by the APBA-American Powerboat Association.

The Hoopa Tribe and Lucky Bear Casino sponsored the event in conjunction with the Cal-Ore ‘Colvin Oil-My Circle-K’ series. 16 boats entered the race with 6 finishing on the lead lap.

Next stop on the Tour is the 60th annual ‘Boatnik’ Tom Rice Whitewater Memorial Day Cup presented by The Grants Pass Active Club set for Monday, May 28th starting at 1pm at Riverside Park, and the turn-around at Robertson Bridge for the 2-lap/4-leg race with over $5,000 in prize money.

Jeff Lewis is the all-time Boatnik winner with 11 wins, followed by the late Don Burnison’s 8 trophies. Roger Sanderson will gun for his third straight Boatnik crown, and his 7th in history.
