The South Medford High School basketball court will be renamed to honor a Southern Oregon legend and champion for children. The floor will be dedicated and named “Dennis Murphy Court” on Friday night, January 13th at 6:45, prior to the start of the South Medford’s boys’ basketball league game against Sheldon to pay tribute to now retired, longtime coach and athletic director, Dennis Murphy.
Murphy, who retired last year after 28 years as the head basketball coach at South Medford High School, left the game with the highest winning percentage for any basketball coach in the state of Oregon.
“This is a very deserving honor to name the court after Dennis Murphy,” said Medford School District Athletic Director Amy Tiger. “He brought so much passion and enthusiasm to the game as he consistently developed winning teams year after year.”
Most will remember the state championship runs that matched South Medford’s Kyle Singler against Lake Oswego’s Kevin Love two years in a row. South Medford won the state title in 2007, and Singler and Love went on to careers in the NBA. Nine years later, Murphy would wrap up his coaching career with a dream finale. His team played for the state championship, finishing second in the state to a powerhouse West Linn team. Murphy’s energy and spirit will always be felt in the South Medford Gym.
