SPORTS OSCARS WILL HAVE TO WAIT: OSA AWARDS CANCELLED

Sadly, the 62nd Annual ‘Oregon Sports Awards’ scheduled for Sunday night at the Nike Campus has been cancelled.

Because of the snow storm and ice conditions that hit the state, the OSA’s will be cancelled, and no make-up date has been set yet.

The awards feature the best local and statewide male and female athletes from across the state, and coaches, players, teams, and dignitaries are selected in several categories.

And, the fans pick the winners from a pool of finalists chosen by a committee. See the list of OSA Finalists.

Among the awards is the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ award is Pat Casey (OSU Baseball), and Scott Brosius (Linfield), and Caleb Porter (Timbers).

This is very tough pick if I’m voting as fans do.  Casey deserves it for getting the Junior-Senior laden Beavs back to Omaha with the Pac-12 Title ring, and best record in the history of the school.

Brosius is just great for baseball anywhere, and mainly in McMinnville.  Linfield won the NCAA D-3 Title and Brosius has more in his pocket.

The former MLB World Series MVP deserves the honor, also.

Would the two great baseball icons partner one day in Corvallis? I’m inclined to believe each has thought about that, and it’s very possible.

It will be a question I will broach Coach Casey with when we board the plane to begin the 2014 Season Wednesday.

Meantime, Jacoby Ellsbury (Yankees), Ashton Eaton (Olympic Gold Decathlete), and Damian Lillard (Trailblazers) headline the ‘Harry Glickman Pro of the Year’ honor.

I’m a guy who gauges greatness on Team Championships, and so I’m going with Jacoby.

2 Titles, All-Star, and now signing the 4th largest contract in Yankee history for
$159-million. Not bad for a kid from little ole Madras, ay? And, when you coming on our Show Jacoby?

Although Ashton has been so great to our Talk Show over the years, and a neat guy to get to know, I can’t put him in the winners circle yet, until he repeats either an Olympic gold, or another World Title like Dan O’Brien.

‘The Bill Hayward Amateur Athlete of the Year’ is probably the most talked about, and hardest to pick who will emerge as the winner.

Marcus Mariota (Oregon QB), Michael Conforto (OSU Baseball), and Brandin Cooks (OSU Football).

No disrespect to Cooks, but I’m down to Mariota and Conforto.  Both are superb and even though more fans know about Marcus….I’m giving the nod to Michael.  He won a Pac-12 Title and was All-American in his second season with OSU.

In addition, there are about 15 other category winners, but all will have to wait the rescheduled date at the Tiger Woods Center in Beaverton.

In Redmond, Ridgeview HS Senior Boomer Fleming is a finalist for the ‘Johnny Carpetener Prep Athlete of the Year honor.

Fleming led the Ravens to the 4A State Championsip and was the 4A Player of the Year.  Fleming also committed to wrestle for Stanford University next fall.

He is a 2-time State Champion.

All the champions, and all the trophies, and all the awards will have to wait.  Right now, Mother Nature takes credit for the cancellation of the Oregon Sports Awards

Stay tuned to Newstalk 100/1110-AM KBND for details on the awards make-up date.
