St. Mary’s Set to Receive 7th Oregonian Cup
On Friday, October 6th at 10:00 a.m. Kyle Stanfield of the OSAA will present St. Mary’s with the 2016-2017 3A Oregonian Cup during a school-wide assembly in the main gym.
This will be the second consecutive year, and seventh time in the past decade St. Mary’s has been recognized with this prestigious award.
Started in 1999 the Oregonian Cup was created to recognize schools in each classification for excellence in athletics, academics, activities, and sportsmanship.
Unlike the previous year, which saw St Mary’s win multiple OSAA State Championships, this year’s win was a culmination of points earned through gritty performances on the field of play as well as excellence in the classroom.
Last season started with the football team reaching the state playoffs for the first time in 22 years and culminated with Girls Golf winning it’s second state championship and baseball bringing home it’s first OSAA State Championship since 1982. In between saw another ten Crusader teams earn spots in state playoffs and finish with high placements in both team and individual sports.
Academic excellence, a hallmark of St Mary’s, continued as ten teams finished their seasons in the top 5 for 3A in the Academic All-State standings. Football, Volleyball, Boys Tennis, and Girls Track and Field all finished with the top team GPAs in the 3A classification.
In the Sportsmanship component, for the second straight year, St. Mary’s finished the year with no ejections in any sport which earned additional points toward the final Oregonian Cup standings.
Earning the school’s seventh Oregonian Cup also keeps St. Mary’s in elite company as only four other schools, in any classification, have been recognized more times since its inception (Jesuit, Santiam Christian, Marist, and Triad).
