Under grey skies Tuesday afternoon, a Summit Storm boiled, rolled and electrified the Lava Bears on the Summit pitch in a doubleheader soccer attraction.
The girls took the field first at 4:30 and Summit jumped all over the #2 ranked Lady Bears in a hurry with Christina Edward (M/F, Jr) scoring the first of four goals in the 20th minute.
Megan Cornett (F, Soph) would score just two minutes later, and Edwards would add two more before the end of the first forty minutes, completing a first half hat trick.
Cornett would hit pay dirt in the back of the net again early after the intermission, and Megan Buzzas (F, Sr) would add a long looping shot that fell neatly behind keeper Aubrie Elle Kincaide (Sr).
Edwards would polish off the scoring by pushing another shot past Kincaide, and the Storm would go to full time with a dominating 7-1 victory, going to 9-2-2 on the year and 6-1-2 in the IMC.
Summit ends their 2014 IMC campaign with a league match Tuesday Oct. 28 at 5pm against the Mountain View Cougars.
Meanwhile Bend’s girls’ team falls to 9-1-2 overall, 4-1-1 in the IMC with two league games remaining on their schedule, a pair of home matches against Mountain View and Redmond.
The boys would take the pitch shortly after, and much like the first match Summit didn’t waste any time.
Three minutes is all it took for the #1 ranked Storm to jump to a 1-0 lead when midfielder Ralf Neuschmied (Sr) beat the Lava Bear defense with a sharp shot.
Bend would make the score 2-0 off of an own goal in an attempt to clear the ball, and things only got worse for the Bears as Dane Kiger, twin brother of fellow freshman midfielder Liam Kiger, scored in the 47th minute off a brilliant setup from his team, illiciting chants of “He’s a Freshman” from Summit supporters.
Kiger would be named the ‘Sun Mountain Fun Center Player Of The Game’.
“Diego had a great chest down, he laid it right out for me and I just hit it,” said Kiger after the game, crediting defender Diego Flores (Sr) with the assist.
Tanner Abbott (Sr D) would make it 4-0 after heading a corner kick past the goalie in the second half, and Summit would score the final goal of the evening, except unfortunately against themselves as an own goal got past Carlos Baez (Sr GK) to make the score 4-1 at full time.
With the victory, the Storm take home the IMC league championship in boys’ soccer and guarantee themselves a bid in the state championship playoffs.
“The win tonight’s good,” said Kiger of the playoff bid. “It makes us feel confident going into the end of the season.”
Summit improves their record to 11-1-1 overall, undefeated in the league at 7-0 and will close the season with two matches, first on the 28th against Mountain View, and then on the 30th against the Sisters Outlaws. Bend falls to 7-5 on the year, and 3-3 in the Intermountain Conference.
