SUMMIT LEAVES NO DOUBT, DOMINATES FOG BOWL AND BEND

The Summit Storm defeated the Bend Lava Bears last year, 17-14, amid controversy in the final 6-seconds of a goal-line stand. This was not the case Friday, in any sense, and make no mistake, Summit blew away the Lava Bears this time for a 40-13 win.

Summit wins the Fog Fest as an unusual bank of fog set in at Punk Hunnell Stadium. The Storm improve to 2-1/6-2, while the Lava Bears slip to 2-1/5-3.

Motivated by the chance to make the playoffs for the 2nd straight year, and motivated further still by the loss of beloved Assistant Coach Andre Parris, Summit jumped all over Bend in a hurry, capitalizing on a fumble recovered by ILB Jacob Thompson (Jr. 5-11/180) that set up a 24 yard Cam McCormick (Jr. 6-5/220) touchdown grab with 5:51 remaining in the first.

Offensive production would just about grind to a halt in the first half for Bend, as the Neil Elshire coached Storm defense was nasty. Summit forced an early fumble, then stymied Bend who failed on downs twice.

Once, a seemingly drive by Bend saw the ball slip backwards out of QB Creighton Simmonds’ (Sr. 6-0/175) hands on a pass attempt as the second quarter got underway.

The savvy Sophomore Bledsoe wasted no time, and went for the jugular as he hooked up with WR Nick Mason (Jr. 6-3/170) who caught a 26 yard reception with 3:41 remaining in the half giving Summit a 13-0 lead, they never let go.

Summit would capitalize on another pair of ‘three-and-outs’ by Bend in the second half, as Kyle Cornett hauled in a pass from John Bledsoe for 65 yards as the third quarter began. 20-0.

Get used to this as Cornett catches anything Bledsoe throws short with the screen game, or deep vertical sprints, resembling another Bledsoe, Drew, and his favorite TD target Ben Coats of the New England Patriots.

Then, Sean Kent got into the festivities, scoring on a 65 yard run with seconds to go in the third quarter. Both Kent and Cornett are explosive and fast, and could cause big fits for D-Coordinators in November.

Bend seemed to get it together between these two scores, however, finally getting on the board on a screen from Creighton Simmonds that would set Chris Wallace up for a 59 yard touchdown. 27-7

Bend’s last gasp would come at the 10:45 mark in the fourth, as Quinn Fettig brought in a Simmonds back shoulder fade in the end zone. The extra point failed keeping Summit on top, 27-13

That would open the floodgates once more for Summit, as Kyle Cornett would add a 12 yard score making it 34-13, and Sean Kent capped off the scoring at 40-13 with a 52 yard touchdown jaunt.

John Bledsoe would finish the evening 22-of-28 for 334 yards and 4 touchdowns. Bledsoe has already cashed in on 10 TD passes in his Sophomore debut.

Sean Kent would rush for 132 yards and be named the ‘Sun Mountain Fun Center Player of the Game’ for his efforts.

Kent spoke about how important this win was for his team. “It means a lot we have heard a lot of things that we are not tough enough, that we cannot run the ball, that we are soft at Summit, and we came out here and proved them wrong.”

Summit improves to 6-2, inching them one step closer to the OSAA Playoffs.

Their spot depends on next week’s match up between Bend vs. Mountain View on Halloween Night. But, for now, Summit has piece of the playoff ticket, again.

Because Summit has beat Bend, Mountain View has beat Summit; THEN, if Bend beats Mountain View, all three clubs would end the season with identical 3-1 IMC record.

According to coach Padilla “everyone has a loss against each other and a win against each other, it is a 3-way tie”.

Padilla adds there as been no agreement made between the IMC schools as to a Tiebreaker, if needed..

Summit finishes the regular season hosting North Salem (2-6) on Halloween night 7pm.
