Tablerock Sports’ Athlete of the Week presented by Arby’s: Gavin Rajagopaul

The St. Mary’s Crusader are coming off a second place finish in Southern Cascade League play, just a year ago. However, this years team is completely different, loosing nine starting players, including eight seniors.

On opening night of the season, that didn’t stop running back Gavin Rajagopaul. He rushed for 221 yards, including two 70-yard touchdown runs, on just 12 carries and three touchdowns, on the way to a St. Mary’s 27-6 win at Creswell high school. Teammate Alex Heycke added the last score.

Head coach Jamie Young had mention that the Crusaders wanted to keep the game simple for first year quarterback Cody Connor and they really wanted to execute on their run games. He was looking for a young offensive line to hold their blocks all game. Well, I think they can say they accomplished that.

When we asked Gavin how it felt to see all that green in front of him and realize that he’s going to be able to take it to the house he simply responded with, “It felt good.” Humble words for a powerful player.

Stay tuned for more Athletes to come each week!
