The Wildcats Gunner Pollman intercepted Toby Webb’s first pass from scrimmage and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown to set the tone, and #5 Wilsonville took down the defending ‘5A State Champions,’ Mt.View High School 49-33 Friday night.
After holding the #7 ranked Cougars to a 3-and-out on their next drive, the Wilsonville offense went to work, as QB Nick Highberger found Tanner Shipley for a 59 yard touchdown pass, the first of 3 scores for Shipley on the night, and Mountain View was in a hole early.
After the game, lineman Joe Hester said “We just had a tough time wrapping up on the outside, and they really used their team speed to get around the edge.”
A Field Goal from Bryce Tipton gave Mountain View their first points, but Wilsonville again scored 14 unanswered points to give themselves a 28-3 advantage after the first quarter.
Mountain View would get a sack from Trevor Roberts of Highberger in the endzone for a safety, making the score 28-5.
Wilsonville then sent Shipley back to work, who capped a 78 yard drive with a 25 yard touchdown run to make it 35-5 at the half.
In the 2nd half, Mountain View finally had the ground game working as Kyler Ayers capped 7 play drive with his first of 2 scores, a 1 yard touchdown run that made the game 42-12 after 3 quarters.
Mountain View outscored Wilsonville 21-7 in the 4th quarter with Ayers 2nd touchdown run, and touchdown catches from Kyle Johnson and senior WR Justin Glembocki hauled in a pass with 38 seconds remaining to make the final 49-33 margin.
Kyler Ayers finished with 190 yards to go with his two touchdowns to lead Mountain View, who falls to 2-3 overall and will head to Pendleton next week.
Ayers would have much rather escaped Wilsonville with a win, saying “I don’t really care about my numbers, as long as we move the ball and put the ball in the endzone, that helps us win ballgames. It’s nice to do well, but it doesn’t mean anything if the team doesn’t win.”
Tanner Shipley led Wilsonville with 107 yards receiving and his 3 touchdowns, and Nick Highberger completed 13 of 17 for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Wildcats, who have won four straight after dropping their season opener to (6A) Sprague.
No question the showdown on October 12th when #5 Wilsonville hosts #1 Sherwood will be one of the premier games in the state. The top-8 teams as per OSAA ‘Power Rankings’ will receive a first-round playoff bye.
