It was a bit of a scare for the Bend Lava Bears last night in Redmond as the state’s 4th ranked class 5-A team pulled out a 24-13 victory to keep its record unblemished and remain unbeaten at 5-0.
Redmond (2-3) shot itself in the foot with 5 turnovers.
Three miscues came in the red zone as quarterback Daulton Hanks fumbled twice, and threw 1 pick allowing the Bears defense to hold the 6A Panther cats out of the end zone.
At the same time, however, Redmond’s defense put a stop to the potent Bears rushing attack. That, however, opened things up for junior QB Jonah Koski who torched the Panthers secondary for 326-yards and 3 TD’s.
Senior J.C. Grim had 2 TD receptions bringing his season total to 9. Grim ended the night with 9-catches for 188-yards, including a 94-yard short out pattern that went to the house.
“They committed to the run, and they did a good job in stopping our run game with 8-guys all committed to the run, and we knew they would” said Bend head coach Craig Walker.
“And, so we knew we could get J.C. in some open space and let him go to work, and we just ran a little out to the 3 receiver boundary side with a rollout and J.C. slipped by a guy in 1-on-1 coverage and went all the way.”
Walker added, “and, J.C. had a bubble screen pass called back that would have been a 15-yard score.”
Inspite of the 5 turnovers, Redmond hung tough until Bend connected with Duke (Lucas #9 pictured above) DeGaetano out of the backfield with about 2:50 to play, and the junior back rambled 50-yards to seal the win.
“Redmond lost the ball 3 times inside the red zone, and that was a big difference.”
Bend plays at Summit this week, and the Storm have won 4-straight improving to 4-1 on the year, and equaling a program best for number of wins in a season dating back to the 2008 & 2006 seasons when the Storm finished 4-6 both times.
Sophomore runningback J.T. Evans rushed for 3 TD’s on runs of 4, 49, and 21 yards leading Summit to a 28-16 win at Hood River.
Evans ended the night with 248 yards for his 2nd straight 200-yard plus game. Last week Evans ran for 216 yards and 3 scores.
Cole Thomas hauled in a 26-yard TD pass from Max Lindsay rounding out the Storm scoring.
Meantime, at Jack Harris stadium the fireworks show was a bargain for Cougar fanatics as 5th ranked Mt. View (4-1) and Sr. QB Jacob Hollister threw for 5 first half TD’s leading to a 63-0 shutout win over The Dalles (1-4).
Hollister connected with his brother Cody for the first 3 scores on connections of 20, 19, and 27 yards.

Then, the All-League QB mixed in John Carroll, and Nick Gentry on short pass receptions that both Cougars turned in to TD jaunts of 66 and 75 yards respectively.
Carroll was playing in only his 2nd games since returning from an achilles tendon injury that was casted.
Tailback Dimitri Dillard broke 2 tackles and got great downfield blocks by Carroll, and Colton Bachman for a 58-yard TD run just 13-seconds in to the second half on the old USC ‘toss sweep left’ play.
Trevor Roberts would add 2 rushing touchdowns and Tony Thomas pounded the ball in for the Cougars final score of the night.
Elsewhere, Culver evened its record to 2-2 with a 39-12 win at Vernonia (1-3).
Miguel Gutierrez ran for 3 TD’s (21, 12, 8), and Jesus Retano scored three times in the 4th quarter with a 50-yard run, 35-yard pass reception, and a 55-yard interception.
The Bulldogs host 2-time defending State 2A Champion Scio (4-1) next Friday.
#5 LaSalle pounded Madras, 51-6 in a Tri-Valley League opening game for both teams. Madras (2-2) returns home to greet #14 Gladstone.
Sisters (0-5) nearly scored its first win of the year under head Coach Clyde Powell, but Junction City (1-3) held on for a 7-0 Sky Em win at home. The Outlaws host 7th ranked Elmira (4-1) Friday.
Crook County (3-2) fell at home to Cascade Christian of Medford, 43-15. And, LaPine lost at Cottage Grove, 27-14. The Cowboys host Washougal, Wa. next week while The Hawks welcome Sweet Home.
