Lady Buffalos Squeak By Lady Rangers

April 23, 2017 by OregonPrepSports

A two-run sixth inning wasn’t quite enough to overcome the Buffalos

ESTACADA, OR – Saturday was a beautiful day for softball at Coe Field. After back to back home runs by senior Hailey Clark and Freshman Rylie Canifax, it wasn’t quite enough as the Madras Lady Buffaloes beat the Lady Rangers 8-6.

The scoring started early for the Lady Rangers (8-5, 1-3 Tri-Valley League), as senior catcher Hailey Clark took the first pitch from Lady Buffaloes (8-5, 3-1) sophomore Lizzie Steuart and smashed it over the center field fence for an early 1-0 lead. “When I saw that pitch,” said Clark about the home run, “I was like, ‘No. She [Steuart] needs to be punished!”

Freshman Rylie Canifax wants a part of the action as well, as she took the second pitch she was offered for a solo shot to make it 2-0. “When I saw Hailey do it [hit her home run], I was like, ‘OK, now I have to do one,’”, said Canifax, talking about her home run in the first. “I saw the ball right down the middle, well, and took a swing at it and it went over.”

Cowgirls Blow Over Lady Rangers During Storm

April 10, 2017 by OregonPrepSports

The Cowgirls used the high winds to the benefit to win over Lady Rangers

ESTACADA, OR – Maybe it was the heavy rain. Maybe it was the wind. Maybe it was the scoreboard flickering on and off during the game. Either way, Friday’s wind and rain storm did not benefit the Lady Rangers, as they fell 13-2 in 6 innings to the Crook County Cowgirls.

Things did not start out well for the Lady Rangers (4-6, 0-1 Tri-Valley Conference), as the Cowgirls (5-4, 1-0 Tri-Valley Conference) stuck out 6 batters in the first three innings. Estacada held strong, only allowing 1 run in those 3 innings, but that’s when the rain and wind started taking its toll on the game.

Lady Rangers Make Swiss Cheese Out of Cheesemakers

April 9, 2017 by OregonPrepSports

A seven-run first inning secures the win for the Lady Rangers

ESTACADA, OR – Sophomore pitcher Emily Gant pitched a gem on Thursday. In 3 innings on the hill, Gant allowed no runs on only four hits, striking out two, and walking two in a 9-2 win against Tillamook on Thursday.

The scoring started early for The Lady Rangers (4-5), getting 7 out of 11 batters across home plate in the first inning. Tillamook (1-5) had no answer for Gant, as she faced 11 batters in the 3 innings she was on the mound.

The scoring didn’t stop for Estacada as senior catcher Hailey Clark doubled to start the third inning. Freshman third baseman Riley Canifax singled, but Clark was tagged out. Sophomore first baseman Izzy Hagel singled, and second baseman Tessa Riedel knocked Canifax and Hagel in with a line drive single to the wall, to make it 9-0 Rangers after 3.

Scoring Machine Meets Immovable Defense

March 7, 2017 by OregonPrepSports

Ever since I heard that a sophomore from The Dalles scored 50 points in a game last season, I have wanted to see Dakota Murr in action. Fortunately, some video clips are available online so I could see his best moves and plays. Of course, everyone’s a star on their own highlight reels.

The best information I could find had the 6-1, 150-pound guard averaging 19 points per game in 2015-16.

Last month, The Dalles had a play-in game at Rex Putnam, and I was there. I knew The Dalles was not very good, putting up a 7-15 record and an OSAA ranking as the 27th best team out of 33 5A teams. Putnam was 15-10 and ranked 10th.

OK, I was not expected to see a close game; this was about a talented mystery man unknown to most fans around the state.
